Work-Life Balance for Single Parents: Lessons from My Experience

Work-life balance is a term that many of us have heard, but it can be challenging to achieve. As a single parent, the challenge can be even greater, as you have to balance the demands of work with parenting responsibilities. You want to be productive at work, grow your career, and be present for your children. Finding the right balance can be a daunting task, but there are some hacks that you can use to help you.

For me, work-life balance means finding a way to balance work and personal life without one area taking over the other. This allows me to have time and energy for activities I enjoy, quality time with my children, and success in my career.

At times, I have felt the pressure from work when my personal life was not thriving. I wanted to have more energy for after-work activities, but instead, I found myself feeling drained and unmotivated. Other times, being a single parent left me feeling exhausted and powerless, which affected my ability to concentrate at work. Fatigue and lack of energy can often stem from underlying issues, like burnout or even something as simple as vitamin D deficiency.

I want to make it clear here that we all have different stories and life phases. I’ve been raising three kids solo since 2017 while holding a full-time tech job. In my case, burnout and vitamin D deficiency arose from a combination of factors, compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic. A lot has changed, from how I work and handle my solo caregiver responsibilities to my finances. Through it all, I’ve learned that work and life need to coexist in harmony for me, and maintaining that balance is vital.

You can use online resources such as Glassdoor, LinkedIn, or Indeed to find companies that offer flexible working hours, parental leave, and other useful benefits. It’s also helpful to explore sustainable career paths that are well-suited for single parents and offer the balance and stability needed to manage work and family life.

Once you have identified the companies, you need to do your research. Visit their websites and learn more about what they are offering. Look for reviews and comments from employees who are parents. This will give you an idea of what it’s like to work for the company as a single parent.

Finally, reach out to your LinkedIn network and check if anyone you know is a parent. Don’t be shy to send them a message asking more about their experience with a family-friendly policy from a company they work for.
