Shift Your Focus: Release the Weight, Embrace the Moment
As single moms, we often carry the emotional weight of loneliness, guilt, and fears. But what we choose to focus on shapes our experience of life.
The New Year is the perfect time to ask yourself:
- What do I want to bring into my life?
- What do I want to cherish and appreciate?
- How can I make better choices for my family and myself?
Releasing what no longer serves you—negative thoughts, unnecessary comparisons, or impossible standards—creates space for what truly matters: joy, love, and the resilience to keep building.
Build Block by Block: Small Actions Create Big Results
For years, New Year hasn’t been fancy at my home. I worked (from home) on December 31st this year because I hadn’t submitted vacation days in time. My work-from-home routine is really helping me get the most out of challenging days, especially during times like Christmas and New Year. I still created a beautiful Christmas and New Year for my family.
The Blocks I’m Building With
Here’s what I’ve started with, and maybe you can, too:
1. Legos
Watching my kids build with Lego reminded me that life is the same—we build it piece by piece. Even small efforts create something meaningful over time.
This year, I chose this set for boys and this for us girls.
2. Our Christmas Tree
This year, my kids wanted a new white tree. I bought it on a tight budget, and they decorated it themselves. Their joy reminded me that happiness isn’t about what we don’t have but what we create together.
3. Family Albums
We flipped through old photos, laughing and crying at the memories. These happy and challenging moments are the foundation we’ve built, reminding us how far we’ve come and keeping us grounded.
4. Workouts
Between sports activities for kids, I like to stay active and work out. I started using the Swan by Carolina app, and it’s helping me feel stronger and more resilient day by day, tone by tone. Movement keeps me grounded and reminds me of my inner strength, even on tough days.
5. Power Food
As a health coach, I believe in nourishing myself and my family from the inside out. Food is my medicine, and my daily meals fuel me to keep going for my kids and myself.

Mindset Matters: Focus on What You’re Building, Not What’s Missing
It’s easy to get caught up in what we lack—time, support, financial freedom. But shifting your mindset to focus on what you’re creating is transformative.
Remind yourself:
- Life will always have challenges, but it also brings opportunities for joy and connection.
- Each day is a chance to build on what you already have, no matter how small or imperfect it feels.
The most important thing is to keep showing up, knowing that even small efforts contribute to something meaningful.
Nourish Your Body and Mind: Tools for Resilience
As a single mom, your energy and strength are essential—not just for your family but also for yourself. Building resilience starts with taking care of your own needs.
Here are some tools that can help:
- Movement: Whether a structured workout or a simple walk, moving your body boosts your energy, reduces stress, and reminds you of your strength.
- Nourishment: Food is medicine. Through my journey and what I now teach my clients, I’ve learned that nutrition can be a powerful tool for emotional recovery. You can discover how to build resilience with a 7-day meal plan for emotional recovery here. Focusing on nutrient-rich foods can soothe anxiety, stabilize mood, and regain a sense of well-being.
- Reflection: Take time to look back on your accomplishments. Family photo albums, journaling, or even a moment of gratitude can ground you in how far you’ve come.
Create Traditions That Matter
Happiness often lies in the small traditions we create with our kids. A new Christmas tree, a family game night, or even a shared meal can become the moments your children remember most.
As a single mom, you have the power to shape these traditions. They don’t have to be extravagant—what matters is the love and togetherness they bring.
The Reminder We All Need: You Can Always Start Again
No matter where you are, you always have the opportunity to start again. It doesn’t matter how broken things feel—each day gives you a chance to rebuild.
Ask yourself:
- What foundation do I want to create for myself and my family?
- How can I incorporate joy, strength, and resilience into daily life?
- What small steps can I take today to move closer to the life I want?
Your foundation might include:
- The desire to keep learning and growing.
- A commitment to joy, even in the small moments.
- Strength to keep moving forward, no matter what.
These elements build a life that is not just about surviving but thriving.
Practical Steps for the Year Ahead
Here are few ideas how to start the year with joy and resilience.
- Write down three things you want to focus on this year. Let these be your guideposts.
- Schedule time for movement daily to build flexibility and strength.
- Create a small weekly tradition with your kids—something fun and straightforward like crafting, a movie night, or a special meal. Pizza night or waffle day always breaks the weight off our shoulders.
- Make time to reflect. Whether it’s flipping through family albums or journaling, reflection helps you see the progress you’ve already made.
