As a certified health coach, full-time tech professional in an IT company, and single parent of three, I’ve struggled to balance work, family, and self-care. Most days, it feels like it’s all work and no life. The demands of my tech job and my responsibilities as a health coach and single parent often leave little room for anything else. I vividly remember a particularly chaotic week when I realized I hadn’t spent quality time with my kids—or myself—for days. My life felt like it was all work and no living, and I knew I had to make a change. This realization led me to find a better balance, where I could live fully and not just work to survive.
In this article, I’m sharing the tips and hacks that have helped me create a more balanced life. Whether you’re a busy parent, a professional trying to find harmony, or someone who wants to enjoy life more, these strategies are not just theoretical—they’re based on my own experiences managing a demanding tech career, a second job as a health coach, and the challenges of single parenting. They can help you live, not just work.
Understanding the Work-Life Balance Equation
Defining Work-Life Balance
Work-life balance is more than a trendy phrase—it’s about finding harmony between your professional responsibilities and personal life and ensuring that neither side suffers and that work and life coexist in a way that makes you feel fulfilled rather than drained.
For example, there was a time when I was so deeply engrossed in a project at my IT job that I missed my daughter’s school play. It was a wake-up call, reminding me that if I didn’t set more explicit boundaries, my work and personal life would continue to suffer.
The Consequences of Imbalance
In the tech industry, where demands are high and the pace is relentless, I noticed the effects of imbalance slowly creeping into my personal life. Late nights and weekends spent catching up on work left me constantly tired, easily irritated, and missing precious moments with my kids. Over time, this imbalance led to burnout, which took a toll on my work performance, health, and overall happiness.

The Importance of Prioritization
One of my most significant changes was learning to prioritize what truly matters. As a tech professional, health coach, and single parent, prioritization meant focusing more on my family, health, and personal growth while meeting my work responsibilities. It’s about finding that sweet spot where both areas of your life can thrive without sacrificing one for the other.
To achieve this, I began by assessing my daily tasks and identifying those aligned with my core values. By doing so, I allocated my time and energy more effectively, ensuring that I could excel at work while still being present for my children and myself.
Setting Boundaries Between Work and Life
Establishing Clear Boundaries
Setting clear boundaries between work and personal life is crucial, especially when your job involves high demands and long hours, like mine in the tech industry. Without these boundaries, work can easily spill over into every aspect of your day, leaving you with little time for yourself or your family. I started by establishing specific work hours and strictly adhering to them, which allowed me to be fully present with my kids when I was off the clock. Knowing I had dedicated time for each aspect of my life brought relief and control.
Hack # 1: Time Blocking
One technique that worked wonders for me is time blocking. I schedule specific times in my calendar for work, family, and self-care activities. Time blocking keeps me organized and ensures I’m dedicating time to each crucial area of my life.

Learning to Say No
For a long time, I struggled with saying no. I felt guilty turning down work requests or social invitations, even when they clashed with my priorities. But saying no is sometimes necessary to maintain balance. Learning to say no was a powerful tool that empowered me and gave me the confidence to prioritize my needs, and it can do the same for you.
Hack # 2: The “Yes, But “Strategy
If you find it hard to say no, try the “Yes, but ” strategy. For example, if someone asks you to take on an extra project, you could say, “Yes, but I can’t start until next week.” This way, you’re not overcommitting, and you’re still helpful. The ‘Yes, but ‘strategy allows you to set boundaries without feeling guilty, ensuring you can focus on your priorities while considering others’ needs.
Integrating Wellness into Your Daily Routine
Physical Health as a Priority
It’s easy to let physical health take a backseat when you’re busy, but it’s one of the most important aspects of a balanced life. Regular exercise, proper nutrition, and adequate sleep are non-negotiables in my routine.
Hack # 3: Morning Routine for Success
I’ve created a simple morning routine with a quick workout and a nutritious breakfast. Even 15 minutes of exercise in the morning can set a positive tone for the day, giving you energy and mental clarity to tackle your tasks. Start your day with a burst of energy by incorporating these easy morning workouts from my article Before the Alarm: Energizing Morning Workout Hacks for Busy Parents.
Mental and Emotional Wellness
Balancing work and life isn’t just about physical health—it’s about mental and emotional wellness, too. Practices like mindfulness, meditation, and journaling can help reduce stress and enhance overall well-being, showing that your mental and emotional health is just as important as your physical health.
Hack # 4: Micro-Meditations
If you’re short on time, try micro-meditations. These are 5-minute meditation sessions that you can do during a break or before a meeting to reset your mind and reduce stress.
Creating Quality Family Time
The Value of Family Moments
One of the main reasons I sought better balance was to spend more quality time with my kids. I wanted to be present, not just physically but mentally and emotionally. Family moments are precious and don’t have to be elaborate to be meaningful.
Involving Kids in Daily Activities
To maximize time together, I started involving my kids in daily activities. Whether it’s cooking dinner or doing laundry, these moments became opportunities for bonding.
Hack # 5: Family Meal Prep
Meal prepping became a fun family activity. Not only does it save time during the week, but it also teaches my kids about healthy eating and responsibility. Plus, it’s a great way to catch up on each other’s days.
Scheduled Family Fun
We also started scheduling regular family outings and game nights. By putting these events on the calendar, we ensure they happen regularly, providing us with something to look forward to.

Carving Out Time for Yourself
Self-Care is Not Selfish
As a single mom, it’s easy to feel guilty about taking time for myself. But I’ve learned that self-care is essential—it’s not selfish. I’m better equipped to care for my kids and handle my work when I care for myself.
Pursuing Hobbies and Interests
Finding time for hobbies has been a game-changer for me. Whether reading, gardening, or painting, pursuing activities I enjoy helps me recharge and brings joy to my life. These moments of joy and fulfillment inspire and motivate me to maintain a balanced life. Discover relaxing hobbies that bring joy and balance to your busy life in the article Holistic Healing at Home: 12 DIY Wellness Hobbies for Single Parents.
Hack # 6: Hobby Time Blocks
Just like work and family time, I block out specific times in the week for hobbies. Treating this time as a non-negotiable appointment ensures it happens.
Solo Recharge Moments
In addition to hobbies, having solo time to reflect and relax is crucial. I often walk alone or enjoy a quiet cup of tea once the kids are in bed.
Hack # 7: Daily 10-Minute Recharge
I’ve made it a habit to take a daily 10-minute break just for myself. Whether I do deep breathing exercises, stretch, or sit in silence, this small practice makes a big difference in my feelings.
Professional Growth Without Overcommitment
Setting Realistic Career Goals
Professional growth is essential, but it shouldn’t come at the expense of your personal life. I’ve learned to set realistic career goals that align with my desire for balance, avoiding the trap of overcommitting to work.
Hack # 8: SMART Goals
I use the SMART method for setting career goals: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. This approach keeps me focused on what’s important and helps me progress without overwhelming myself.
Leveraging Flexibility at Work
If your job offers flexibility, use it to your advantage. I negotiated flexible hours with my employer, allowing me to work during times that best suit my family’s schedule.
Hack # 9: Flex Time Requests
If you’re considering requesting flexible work hours, approach it with a plan. Show how it will benefit both you and your employer. I’ve found that most employers are open to flexibility if it doesn’t compromise work quality.
The Role of Support Systems
Building a Strong Support Network
No one can do it all alone. Having a reliable support system has been crucial in maintaining my balance. Whether it’s family, friends, or professional networks, having people to lean on makes all the difference.
Hack # 10: Leaning on Your Tribe
Feel free to delegate tasks or ask for help when needed. I’ve learned to lean on my tribe—asking a friend to watch the kids for an hour or hiring a babysitter when I need a break.
Connecting with Like-Minded Individuals
Joining support groups or online communities for single parents and work-life balance enthusiasts has also been invaluable. These connections provide support, inspiration, and motivation to keep going.
Creating a balanced life isn’t about perfection—it’s about making intentional choices that allow you to live fully and joyfully. You can find the balance you seek by setting boundaries, prioritizing wellness, making time for family and self-care, and building a solid support system.
Remember, it’s okay to take small steps. Every little change you make can bring you closer to a more balanced, fulfilling life. And if you ever feel stuck, remember that you’re not alone—I’ve been there, too, and you can turn things around with a little effort.
